LTE: Empowering Nursing Assistants

I’m a proud Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Brandon. As we recently celebrated National CNA Week, I wanted to share how community partnerships are not only transforming individual lives like mine, but also helping to solve Florida’s health care workforce crisis.

Two years ago, I moved to Florida with just $200 in my pocket, seeking stability for myself and my son. After facing housing insecurity and working multiple jobs, I found hope through Dwyer Workforce Development. Thanks to their partnership with United Way Suncoast and Hillsborough Community College, I received free CNA training, wraparound support like transportation and childcare, and job placement assistance. Today, I have a stable job, housing and health insurance.

This model works. Dwyer’s holistic approach — combining education, case management and career support — has helped thousands across the country. Nationally, 81% of Dwyer Scholars complete their certified nursing assistant training, and 86% are placed in health care careers. These numbers reflect the power of investing in people and removing barriers to opportunity.

As the state faces increasing demand for elder care and new federal staffing mandates, certified nursing assistants like me are playing a crucial role. Nurse assistants form an integral part of the health care industry and provide a foundation for future career advancement. These partnerships contribute to developing a more skilled health care workforce, one scholar at a time. I urge the community to support and expand these programs so more people can access opportunity and care.
