Jacksonville at Center of National Workforce Nonprofit Tackling Healthcare Staff Shortages

When Baltimore banker and philanthropist Jack Dwyer founded a workforce development nonprofit, Florida was already where he’d spend part of the year. Five years on, Jacksonville is the organization’s largest market in the state. Dwyer Workforce Development is growing all across Florida, but its leaders say Jacksonville remains where most of its Florida Scholars come from. Sharron Nursing Academy on the Northside is the nonprofit’s lead partner.

To date, the Jacksonville organization has trained about 70% of the nonprofit’s state total.

It’s built around a simple vision: assist students at partner training programs so people facing barriers can finish the program and pursue careers in the medical field.
